There were some real good lookers at Emley Show – and that wasn’t including the thousands of visitors.

Many of the moo-vers and shakers of the animal showing world in Yorkshire turned out.

Preened and polished their animals were primed for the catwalk.

One blond beauty captivated the audience but Gigi wasn’t fazed by all the attention.

She quietly munched on her feed and nuzzled up alongside her eight-week-old calf as the crowds filed past to take a look at an Emley Show champion.

They did that all day as the top country show again attracted massive crowds, even though the weather turned against them later in the day.

Gigi, a British Blonde cow, weighs in at about one tonne and was exhibited by Ken Jackson, from Selby, who has been showing cattle for the best part of 40 years.

“People love getting up so close to cattle like this as they don’t normally get the chance to stand in front of them and admire them.”

Mr Jackson was delighted at his prizes with Gigi at Emley on Saturday, just as he had been when she picked up top awards at the Great Yorkshire Show, Driffield Show and Ryedale Show in recent weeks.

He’s no stranger to the headlines as he fought a much-publicised High Court battle with DEFRA to save his champion bull Boxster, after the agency ruled he should be slaughtered as he was said to have TB.

Mr Jackson won that battle and was among the winners at Emley where it was very much a case of All Creatures Great and Small.

The crowds flocked to see beasts such as Gigi but then filed into the adjoining marquee to see rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs – some as small as a ping pong ball.

Northern Hamster Club chairman Sheryl Lucas said: “It’s been a really good show and people have been really interested.

“For many children a hamster or a guinea pig is their first pet and they learn to love them.

“They are cute and cuddly and that appeals to people.

“Showing them is a lot of fun for owners and people have travelled from all over the country to be here at Emley. It is a great show.”

The crowds packed around the main arena to see attractions including the motorcycle antics of the Stannage International Stunt Team, the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Band, the tractor parade and the Rockwood Hounds.

Marquees across the showground in the shadow of the Emley Moor TV mast were filled with goats, pigeons, rabbits, handicrafts and food, while there were also fields packed with numerous horse and show jumping classes.

The missing element this year were the poultry classes because of fears over avian flu but show secretary Sue Britton believed they had more than compensated for the absence.

“We have seen some really good crowds and certainly through the morning the weather was great.

“When I got up to leave home at 6.45am it was raining but it brightened up and people really enjoyed the good weather.

“We have a new layout for the showground and we have tried to make the most of the stunning views we have across the whole area.

“Entries have held up well in most classes and people say they have had a great time.”
