Bike shop boss Dave Sowerby has opened a coffee shop – for cyclists.
Italian-themed Fausto’s is named after legendary Italian cycling champion Fausto Coppi.
Dave, 52, who runs Sowerby Bros Cycles in Princess Street, Mirfield, has taken an empty shop unit nearby and will serve up coffee, cakes and pastries in cycle-themed surroundings.
Brian, 84, still lives in Mirfield but there’s also his brother Des, who competed in the 1952 Olympics; Mirfield-born Albert Hitchen, twice British professional road race champion in the 1960s; women’s champion Lisa Brambani, who rode at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul; and present-day prospect Jake Womersley, Brian’s grandson.
Dave said cycling and coffee were part of the culture in Europe and added: “In Italy cyclists will pop in for an espresso before setting off on a ride.
“This is a different concept to anything else locally but cycling coffee shops are popular in London and there are some in Ilkley, Harrogate and Manchester.”
All Mirfield’s cyclists are celebrated on a wall of fame and Dave said: “Mirfield has a rich cycling heritage and it’s amazing how many top cyclists Mirfield has produced for a town of its size.”
Sowerby Bros started in Ravensthorpe and will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. The shop has been in Mirfield – Dave’s home town – for 24 years, 18 of them in the current premises.
Dad-of-three Dave, one of the organisers of the Huddersfield Criterium bike race, has taken over the former Susan Mary fashion shop opposite and will stock small-scale cycling essentials such as inner tubes, grips and gels.
Brian, whose daughter Louise won a cyclo-cross World Championship medal, competed against Coppi, who remains a sporting icon in Italy.
Coppi dominated the sport either side of the Second World War, winning the Tour de France in 1949 and 1952.
Memorabilia on the walls includes an image of Coppi on his way to victory in the 1952 Tour de France and a shirt signed by current road race star Tony Martin, who Dave rode with in Switzerland last year.
Fausto’s sells Italian gourmet coffee Illy and gelato, Italian ice cream.
