Part of the M62 was shut after a scare involving a petrol tanker.
Drivers on the busy motorway saw smoke pouring from the tanker as it travelled from Junction 22 at Rishworth towards Outlane on the eastbound carriageway.
It was feared the tanker was on fire but fire crews discovered the axles had overheated.
Police closed lane 1 for a time shortly after 3pm today while the incident was tackled.
Fire crews from Rastrick and Rochdale were called to the scene.
The incident was the second to cause hold-ups for drivers.
Three lanes were shut at Brighouse after a crash in torrential rain.
Ambulance crews and police were called to Junction 25 at Brighouse at 9.41am after two cars collided.
The vehicles were a Renault Megane and a Peugeot. One of the drivers was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with minor injuries.
Other drivers stopped at the scene on the westbound carriageway to help and police said all three lanes were closed at one point.
Driving conditions were said to be bad with torrential rain and mist.
