A man made a false claim to police that his car’s number plates had been stolen after he was caught speeding.

Antony Mellor, of Reed Street, Marsh, appeared before Kirklees magistrates.

He admitted charges of wasting police time and exceeding a 60mph speed limit.

Prosecutor Andy Wills said the offences took place on July 17, when Mellor’s car was clocked speeding on the A590 in Cumbria at midnight.

A speed camera showed he was travelling at 69mph in a 60mph zone. Mellor returned to Huddersfield later that morning.

Mr Wills said: “At 8.49am he called police to report that his number plates had been stolen from his vehicle.”

Mr Wills said police concluded the report was false and the 51-year-old had been driving the vehicle.

The prosecutor added: “He said he panicked and was afraid of receiving points as it would put his insurance premium up.”

Magistrates adjourned sentencing until October 8 for a report to be prepared by the probation service and granted Mellor bail.
