A big public rally to save Huddersfield A&E will go ahead on Saturday.

People have been invited to come show their support for the campaign at 1pm at St George’s Square.

Campaign heads and past patients will be among those to speak of the importance of keeping the service in Huddersfield to avert a “horrendous” situation in the town and Calderdale.

The event has been called by several Huddersfield people, who came together after the Examiner announced the potential risk of closure.

Karl Deitch, from Golcar, set up the Let’s Save Huddersfield A&E Facebook group, which now has almost 40,000 members.

He said: “We want as many people to come down as possible to support our campaign.

“It’s going to be a nice, calm rally.

“It won’t be political – this is just about trying to save the A&E both here and in Calderdale because if one closes down it will be horrendous for the other due to the increased demand.

“We want people to share their experiences by speaking at the event which they should be able to do so by visiting one of the stalls on the day that will be there and asking for myself or any of the other admins on the Facebook.”

Karl said more campaigning is planned.
