A variety show raised £50,000 for flood victims in Calderdale.

The show, at the Victoria Theatre in Halifax on Sunday night, starred legendary comedy duo Cannon and Ball.

The duo performed Together We’ll Be OK, a song they have released again to raise money for the Yorkshire Flood Aid appeal.

More than 1,100 people attended the show, organised by local man Piers Mettrick with help from a friend and former TV journalist Christa Ackroyd.

Stars on stage included young Brighouse comedian Jack Carroll, singer Lizzie Jones, widow of former rugby player Danny Jones, and comic Johnnie Casson.

But the performer who brought the house down with a standing ovation was James Coop, of Halifax, whose monologue Our Little Valley charts the highs and lows of the flood-hit community.

James’s two-minute video has gone viral and Piers invited him to appear and perform his words live as the video played on the big screen behind him.

Piers, who has never organised anything like this before, said: “It was an amazing night and everyone was awesome.

“All the performers gave their time for free, and we also got the venue for no cost. It was a total success.”

The night raised around £25,000 for the Community Foundation for Calderdale and the Government has pledged to double whatever is raised by the charity.

Piers, who has health problems and is on disability living allowance, said: “I can’t help physically with the clean up but I can get on the phone, which is what I did.

“I was pretty emotional when I came off stage after realising what we had achieved.”

Piers is now planning a summer concert, provisionally called Thank You Yorkshire, for Shibden Park in Halifax.

He hopes to sign up West Yorkshire bands The Kaiser Chiefs and Embrace as headline acts.

“It’s early days yet but we spoke to them about the theatre show and nearly had one of them there on the night,” he said.
