Jose Semedo could be Sheffield Wednesday’s returning hero for Saturday’s Championship derby clash with Town.

While Mark Robins welcomes back 11-goal top scorer James Vaughan for the Hillsborough game the third-bottom Owls have their Portuguese midfielder available again.

Both players have served three-match bans after red cards on October 19, Vaughan in Town’s 2-1 defeat at Leicester and Semedo in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at Bolton.

Former Sporting Lisbon and Charlton player Semedo, 28, scored for Dave Jones’ side in last week’s behind-closed-doors friendly at Championship rivals Burnley.

He was sent off for a foul on Bolton’s Jay Spearing, and missed the matches against Barnsley (drew 1-1), Reading (won 5-2) and Derby (lost 3-0).

While 15th-placed Town’s plans to play Manchester City in a friendly were shelved at the request of the Premier League club, Jones fielded a strong side at Burnley, the Championship leaders.

Rhys McCabe, Jermaine Johnson and Miguel Llera all featured on the teamsheet, while Martin Taylor played at centre-back after returning from a loan spell at Brentford.

Striker Chris Maguire provided a reminder of his talents with an industrious shift up front alongside 6ft 4in Austrian Atdhe Nuhiu.

Jones has warned his side, who have just one win all season, that no player is safe from the axe as he aims to cure defensive deficiencies.

The Owls have conceded 23 goals in 14 league games and have yet to keep a clean sheet in any match this season.

Jones said the players “let everybody down” in the 3-0 defeat at Derby, whose star midfielder Will Hughes is being linked with a January move to Liverpool.

Wednesday are missing club captain Anthony Gardner at the back. Due to injury, he is unlikely to return until the second half of the season.

Wolves loanee Roger Johnson has impressed of late, but a lack of continuity in selection has not helped.

Lewis Buxton and stand-in skipper Reda Johnson have missed chunks of the season while Kamil Zayatte and Llera have struggled for consistency.
