A new Huddersfield band has been picked as a BBC record of the week.

From next Monday to Sunday millions of people could hear the first single from alternative pop trio Flawes which will be played repeatedly on Radio 1.

Brighouse singer and bass guitarist Josh Carruthers and drummer Josh Hussey from Fixby – both past pupils of Rastrick High School – along with London guitarist Freddie Edwards are behind the song Don’t Wait For Me, which was picked by BBC Introducing as its record of the week.

This means that it will be played on popular regular shows such as Scott Mills, Greg James, Clara Amfro, Alice Levine and Dev from morning until night.

A dark sounding electronic and dub step beat infused track with guitars and vocals, it was only released by the three in September when they officially launched as a band.

Josh, 25, explained the band’s delight at being picked.

“It’s really exciting because it’s most bands’ dream to get played on Radio 1,” he said.

“I only began working on creating the band late last year and we’ve not been together long so to get our first single on national radio is something we weren’t anticipating but we’re ready for it.

“We just submitted the track via the BBC Introducing website and they rang us up last week to tell us the good news. I think that other bands should try it because it has worked for us.

“It’s come at a great time for us because not only will it hopefully make people aware about our first tour in November but it will coincide with our first EP called Unspkn which we’ve just released on iTunes and Apple Music.”

It is the latest success for Josh who has been following his music dream since he left school at 18.

“I was in a band called Ten Floors and we played all over the UK,” he said.

“But it didn’t work out so I moved to London in 2011 and got work as a session musician playing keyboards.

“And for the last two years I’ve been touring with another musician called Ella Eyre around Europe, which has been great.

“Seeing the hard work she puts in made me want to do something of my own so I asked Josh and Freddie and it’s going really well.

“We’re going to use the publicity from our radio plays to really push ourselves over the next year.

“We’ve got plans for another EP and more live dates and our dream is to play at Leeds Festival.

“We’re ready for whatever’s around the corner.”
