Cold case review

Murder victim Elsie Frost, 14.
Murder victim Elsie Frost, 14.

A man in his 70s has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a West Yorkshire schoolgirl 51 years ago.

The police investigation into the death of Elsie Frost, 14, in 1965 was reopened last year.

Police say a 78-year-old man was held in Berkshire and will be questioned by West Yorkshire officers.

Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen, Senior Investigating Officer in the case, said: “A reinvestigation into Elsie’s murder was launched in 2015 by West Yorkshire Police, backed by a publicity campaign on the 50th anniversary of her death. Since then we have received significant numbers of calls and emails from members of the public offering new information, and have generated new lines of enquiry which officers have been progressing ever since. Following those enquiries we have now arrested a 78 year old man in the Berkshire area and will be interviewing him under caution to progress our investigation.”

CRIME

A rapist escaped a jail sentence for their crime, despite a previous conviction for the same offence.

The criminal in Yorkshire and the Humber was not given a custodial sentence for the crime at a court appearance in 2015, despite a previous conviction for rape.

This was just one of many sentences which were revealed by a Freedom of Information request to the Ministry of Justice.

In other examples a burglar was not given a custodial sentence for the crime at a court appearance in 2015, despite 28 previous burglary offences and 56 total previous convictions, making them the most prolific burglar in the region to avoid jail for an offence last year.

Alton Towers Smiler Footage

Warning: graphic content

CCTV Footage of the Alton Towers Smiler rollercoaster crash which “changed the lives of some of those injured in the most dramatic way” has been released during a court case into the crash.

Alton Towers operator Merlin Attractions has been fined £5 million after admitting health and safety breaches over the Smiler rollercoaster crash.

Two teenagers - Vicky Balch, then 19, and Leah Washington, then 17 - each lost a leg in the collision in June last year.

Stafford Crown Court heard that the victims had watched with “disbelief and horror” before ploughing into an empty carriage on the track, with the impact likened by the prosecution to a 90mph car crash.

Huddersfield University Student Joe Pugh was one of those suffered serious injuries to both legs in the smiler crash.

Judge Michael Chambers QC called the accident a “catastrophic failure” by the company involving basic health and safety measures.

'Honour killing' case

The trial of the father and ex-husband of a Bradford woman for her alleged rape and murder in a so-called honour killing has opened in Pakistan, a defence lawyer said.

Mohammad Shahid is accused of killing his daughter, Samia Shahid, 28, along with her ex-husband, Mohammad Shakeel.

Their trial opened in Islamabad today, lawyer Mohammad Arif said. He said the court delivered the charge sheet to the accused, who must decide by October 7 if they plead guilty or not guilty. Mrs Shahid, was visiting family in July when she was found dead of what were initially assumed to be natural causes, and buried in a local cemetery in the village of Pandori.
