Belgian striker Laurent Depoitre could be the man to put Huddersfield Town back among the Premier League goals and, more importantly, the points.

The 29-year-old has been overlooked for the league starting line-up so far as head coach David Wagner has plumped for former Montpellier frontman Steve Mounie.

Mounie has failed to find the net in any of his five Premier League starts so far and, indeed, missed a glorious headed chance in the 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, aiming high when it seemed easier to score.

A goal at that point, just 17 minutes in, would have given Town huge impetus and put Palace even more on the back foot than they were.

So maybe the time is right to give the lead role to Depoitre, the big signing from Porto whose only start so far was in the Carabao Cup defeat at Stoke City.

Depoitre has been used as a substitute in ever top-flight match so far, playing the whole of the second half against both Chelsea and Manchester City in the opening two games.

Since then, the Belgian has been limited to just 10 minutes against Cardiff City, one minute against Everton and 12 minutes against Palace.

In those final 12 minutes, however, he won plenty of aerial challenges, linked well with teammates as Town chased an equaliser and not only looked hungry to impress, but sharp as well.

With Town struggling for goals generally and up front in particular – only defender Jon Gorenc Stankovic and midfielder Phil Billing have found the net so far – Depoitre looks primed for a start.

Especially so with it being Leicester City as the opposition.

Depoitre, of course, scored a fine goal against them last season at the John Smith’s Stadium – his first in Town colours.

He turned England hero Harry Maguire superbly and burst onto the ball before finishing brilliantly past keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Depoitre looked well in the game all afternoon that September day and terrorised the former champions’ back line.

That back line is deprived of Wes Morgan on Saturday through suspension while Maguire is said to be looking jaded and a bit tired after his exploits with England at the World Cup in the summer, leading to him having a shortened pre-season with his club side, where he has signed a new long-term contract.

New signing Caglar Soyuncu or summer addition Jonny Evans could play in the back line for Morgan, or both could play should boss Claude Puel decide Maguire needs to sit this one out.
